Julie is committed to approaching each patient individually and compassionately with a holistic approach to medicine. Her passion is for ‘Wellness’ and she is grateful and proud to practice this form of medicine to assist patients to achieve optimal health and wellness. Julie uses a number of healing tools, therefore providing treatments that are unique to each patient’s condition. Julie combines the best of Traditional Chinese Medicine with experience in the Western sciences to formulate a unique and caring style of acupuncture that is based on ancient tradition and the best of modern science. Her approach to healing is to help get patients involved in their health and helps to create a new sense of wellbeing.
Julie Hackmann, L.Ac. obtained her four year masters degree from American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. She is certified to practice acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine both nationally and in the state of California. Prior to becoming an acupuncturist, Julie was a chemical engineer in the pharmaceutical industry. She received her B.S. in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech.
Julie is a professional member of the national infertility organization, RESOLVE, as well as the American Pregnancy Association, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), and NorCal Fertility. Julie specializes in women’s health, fertility and pregnancy support as well as internal medicine, pain management and preventative wellness.

Jennifer Bishop L.Ac. is a California Board Certified acupuncturist and herbalist, licensed to practice as a primary care provider. She obtained a 4-year Masters degree in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine from American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACTCM) in San Francisco. She holds Bachelors degrees in Fine Arts and Liberal Arts from the University of Texas in Austin. She is a certified Tui Na practitioner and en route to becoming certified as a Qi Gong instructor. During school she worked at the California Pacific Medical Center stroke clinic treating people with brain and spinal trauma as well as the ACTCM community auricular clinic. Currently she can also be found working at the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic on some Fridays primarily treating drug addiction, emotional problems and pain.
Jennifer's experience with Chinese medicine began with a car accident that left her with fractures in her pelvis. After being treated with acupuncture, her recovery was just short of miraculous and it transformed her life. Jennifer's interest and curiosity about Chinese medicine continues to grow. She has pursued further study in the treatment of pediatric care, women's care, addiction, pain management, internal disorders and emotional problems. She approaches each treatment openly seeking the best possible outcome. Jennifer loves Chinese medicine and being in service of others.
When not in the clinic you can find Jennifer spending time with her husband, three children and two German shepherds, seeing live music, going to the Bar Method or making ceramic art. She loves art and fashion, is fluent in German and loves to bake.
Rachel Root L.Ac. is a licensed acupuncturist in the state of California. She earned a Master of Science degree in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine at American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. Rachel has interned at Retreat Acupuncture with Julie Hackmann for the past few years. At Retreat she has learned painless needle technique as well as extensive training in fertility, pregnancy and Women’s health. She also has experience with pain management, neurology, and cancer support. Rachel has always had an interest in the the human body, and how to optimize health and wellbeing. She studied Exercise Science and earned a B.S. in Kinesiology from Arizona State University. She found Chinese Medicine the perfect way to combine her deep knowledge of the human body, and her long time interest in eastern teachings of body, mind, and spirit. Rachel also completed a clinical acupuncture certificate through the Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in Hangzhou, China. While in China, she worked in hospitals with advanced training in Women’s gynecology, pain management, and scalp acupuncture. Rachel is also certified in Shiatsu therapy.
Although Rachel loves living in San Francisco, she grew up in southern Arizona and calls the desert her home. She balances her life with both adventure and stillness, and will travel at any chance she can get. Rachel also loves experimenting in the kitchen, and eating her way around the city. She enjoys staying active by hiking, doing yoga and qigong.
